Myopia Control Could Save Your Child From Future Vision Problems
Myopia is a very common visual condition wherein children need glasses to see objects in the distance. It is commonly known as "nearsightedness". This refractive error causes light to focus at a point in front of the retina, making it difficult to see distant objects clearly. Myopia has become more prevalent in children in recent years due to increased time focusing near work, usually a screen, and spending less time outdoors. Childhood myopia tends to get worse over time if goes uncorrected.
Moderate to high levels of myopia, due to the elongation of the eye, increases the risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataract, and macular degeneration. By allowing a child’s prescription to change nonstop, we are putting their future vision at risk.
Gordon Wood Optical is proud to offer myopia control lenses, which is meant to slow down the progression of myopia and help preserve your child’s future vision.
Extensive studies have shown that the eye's elongation increases myopia. Because light rays are focused behind the retina, a hyperopic blur in the periphery, leads to the elongation of the eye. By changing the focus of light to in front of the retina at our periphery (side vision), we can signal to the eye not to elongate and grow as quickly, while still maintaining normal clear straight-ahead vision.
